The annual Hire Awards of Excellence celebrate the achievements of companies in the hire industry and recognises the fantastic individuals working within the sector.  It is a great time to catch up with erento customers and associates and mix with the teams behind the brands at some of the country’s largest rental firms, although attendees came from far and wide including Ireland, Europe and USA.   

Guests enjoyed a lavish champagne reception in the Savoy’s River Room and were then escorted into the main ceremony room which truly had the ‘wow’ factor. The tables were decorated beautifully, and the lighting shown in various colours, setting the mood for the evening – the grandeur of the location with large hanging crystal chandeliers and hand painted murals on the walls truly made it a night of luxury.

We all enjoyed a sumptuous four course dinner, which was beautifully presented, so much so we had to take a photo of each plate which arrived in front of us. Guests also had fun sending live tweets throughout the evening to the TwitterWall which was displayed on large screens situated either side of the stage and various others dotted round the room.

The interactive screens filled up with tweets of well wishes and good luck messages and congratulations being sent directly to the winners – oh and of course a few snaps of attendees having fun. It was nice for others who may not have been able to attend to also join in with the evenings events using the hastag: #hireawards.

ENDURO AFRICA 2008 – 2nd to 13th October 2008

Each year, this very special biking race takes place.  Enduro Africa is a unique and challenging motorcycle adventure in aid of 4 amazing causes – UNICEF, Sentebale – The Princes’ Fund for Lesotho, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Touch Africa.

Each year adventurous motorcyclists from all walks of life – beginners and expert riders alike – leave their ‘normal lives’ behind to take up the Enduro Africa challenge; to ride for 8 days across some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring scenery in South Africa. Why? To help save and improve the lives of many people in desperate need. These amazing participants will ride from dawn to dusk each day truly off road as they take on the awesome ‘wild coast’ of South Africa, one of the continents most stunning landscapes.

The ride is set against the dramatic backdrop of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, a place where the needs of the poorest are far removed from our own here in the developed world. This challenge offers the opportunity to learn about yourself and push your limits.

The aim of the rally is to raise at least £150,000 to the charities we support. The conditions we tackle throughout the event ensure that all riders will be tested to the limit whist maintaining a high level of safety. For the less experienced rider a team member will always be available to offer help and advice. Without doubt the adventure is suited to novice and expert alike. In the hands of the Enduro team the rider will gain the confidence to tackle the challenging roads and variable conditions that lie ahead.

Whether negotiating one of the amazing river crossings, riding flat out up the beach past the spectacular Jacaranda shipwreck, or tackling a steep ascent with the waves roaring 200 feet below – anyone will find the experience of Africa exhilarating and memorable. Africa ‘speaks’ to you on so many different levels, your view on life will almost certainly have changed when you return from this trip.

As you can see, in this race you do not only donate – you get a lot of experiences back from it, which you will remember for the rest of your life.

This year, erento is part of this amazing event – by sponsoring Mark from Superbike Rental. He had to raise a minimum of £4995.00 in donations and sponsorship to enter this 12 day event of 2500km of dusty and demanding riding through some of South Africa’s most rugged and isolated terrain.
The money raised will purchase a new Honda 200 Motorcycle which Mark will ride throughout his trip, this bike will then be donated at the end of the tour to a South African Health Worker. These bikes will increase the mobility of the health and medical workers, which will enable them to reach remote villages needing medical assistance.

For the model year 2009 Harley-Davidson has announced some fantastic news. Especially the Touring-Family including Road King, Electra-Glide and Street Glide will profit from a new, 67% stiffer chassis. Additionally, the bikes improved from changes in the swing-arm, tyres and wheels. The exhaust system and engine mount got advanced as well, providing a more precise handling, more payload, more comfort, space for a pillion rider and less tyre wear. The character, style and looks of the Touring-Family remain the same in its entirety.

The Dyna Street Bob and the Heritage Softail Classic however underwent some fundamental revisions in the design. The Dyna Street Bob, for instance, presents newly constructed short silencers, a lower seat, a shortened rear fender with old-school tail light, and black alloys. The completely black cylinders complement the new tin-coloured engine coating, giving a classic gray look of the block.

The Heritage Softail Classic features a more comfortable pillion rider’s seat compared to the current version. Amongst other things, the new windshield is a cool new improvement. Most Sportster models from Harley will show off their newly suspension struts, delivering a better performance. Finally, the flatter front spring minimizes the distance between fender and tyre.

For torque-lovers we recommend the new CVO-Versions of the models Fat Bob, Road Glide, Ultra Classic Electra Glide and Softail Springer. Modified ex works by the ‘Custom Vehicle Operations’ (CVO) department, they present themselves with a 1802ccm  Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine as well as with a special paintwork and a multitude of accessories. These bikes will be introduced in a limited number, which has not been announced yet.

The only new model that has been announced is the V-Rod Muscle. A scantily cut fender, low airscoops, a lower seat and advanced footrests trace the outlines of its sister models V-Rod and Night Rod Special.  Driven by the well-known 1246ccm Revolution engine with 90 kW/123 BHP, an immobiliser, ABS and alarm system complete the V-Rod Muscle’s standard equipment.

Prices start at around £12000.

Once again, erento’s business idea found attention in the media. A few days ago, businessweek published a two-page report, headlined

“Tough Times? Rent, Don’t Buy, with Erento.

Call it an eBay for rentals: Germany’s erento lets you borrow everything from wedding dresses and pets to karaoke machines.”

Nowadays it is financially much harder to own luxuries such as Ferraris or designer handbags. Even wearing jewellery for one special night is getting unaffordable over time. More and more people have already found a solution:

“Short-term rental of all sorts of products (excluding real estate and holiday apartments) already represents an estimated €108 billion ($160 billion) annual market in Europe.”

And the figures are constantly rising.

Businessmen know: the key to success in the rental sector is findability. Especially the internet as information source got extremely important over the past few years. Since many suppliers can’t afford or do not have the know-how to build sophisticated e-commerce and websites, prospective clients often struggle to find what they need.

That is where erento comes in. As the online marketplace for rental items it is the most rapidly expanding sales channel in Europe. Marc Samwer of European Founder Fund, which probed the market before investing, agrees that erento’s approach is unique. “There is no other company in the U.S. or the [European Union] with a liquid marketplace of this kind,” he says.

European attitudes about cars also have evolved. Five years ago, somebody who wanted a convertible would buy one. But now more people are concluding that they really need a convertible only when the weather is good and they can drive with the top down. “I loaded it up and left it outside the house one Saturday night,” he explained. “But during the night, someone drove up and dumped an old bath in it, making the skip overloaded, which meant I would have had to pay an excess fee. I removed it and left it on the grass verge and rang Ashfield Council to ask them to take it away. But they refused, saying it wasn’t their responsibility because I had hired the skip. So what was I supposed to do? I didn’t have the facility to take the bath away. In a sense, someone had fly-tipped this bath and it was lying on the public highway, yet the council wouldn’t remove it.”

In the end, Mr Davies explained his predicament to Hucknall Skip Hire, who waived their rules and kindly took the bath away without any extra charge.

But he is now left wondering whether the council’s time-targets will be little more than empty promises.

Edd de Coverly, Ashfield’s head of neighbourhood services, said:
“Cases such as this are complex and rare.”

Therefore: Whenever you hire a skip on erento, remember to leave it somewhere safe.
